The components and the salivary flow have a direct influence on the composition of the oral microbiota of children and young people with oropharyngeal dysphagia, and studies have already demonstrated the excessive accumulation of supragingival dental calculus in individuals with enteral nutrition. This study aimed to compare the oral hygiene, biochemical, and microbiological aspects of the oral cavity of children and young people with neurological impairment and oropharyngeal dysphagia. Forty children and young people with neurological impairment and oropharyngeal dysphagia were enrolled and divided into two groups: group I, encompassing 20 participants fed via gastrostomy; and group II, encompassing 20 participants fed via the oral route. Oral hygiene and salivary pH and flow were assessed, and a polymerase chain reaction was performed to evaluate the messenger RNA expressions of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tanerella forsythia, and Treponema denticola. In groups I and II, the mean Oral Hygiene Index-Simplified scores were 4 and 2, respectively, showing a significant difference; the mean Calculus Index scores were 2 and 0, respectively, showing a significant difference; and the mean pH was 7.5 and 6.0, respectively, showing a significant difference. Bacterial analysis indicated no association between the two groups. It can be concluded that children and young people who use gastrostomy had a poorer oral hygiene, greater dental calculus deposition, and higher salivary pH. The saliva of patients in both groups contained Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tanerella forsythia, and Treponema denticola.

OBJECTIVES: A resin infiltrant was employed for the treatment of active white spot lesions due to its ability to penetrate into the enamel pores and prevent the progression of the lesion. However, limited information is available about its mechanical effect on different artificial enamel lesions as well as on its resistance to further demineralization. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of the Icon® infiltrant on different artificial caries-like enamel lesions and its resistance to new acid challenges. DESIGN: Artificial lesions were produced in bovine enamel using three different protocols (demineralization/remineralization cycling, DE-RE; 8% methylcellulose gel, MC; and methyl ethyl diphosphonate solution, MHDP; n = 13). The specimens were treated with Icon® and subjected to a new acid challenge using DE-RE cycling. The surface and cross-sectional hardness were evaluated in sound, demineralized, treated and further demineralized enamel areas. Data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's test (p < 0.05). RESULTS: All of the demineralizing protocols produced subsurface artificial caries lesions. The infiltrant was able to partially recover the surface hardness and prevent further surface hardness loss in enamel previously demineralized using the DE-RE and MHDP protocols. In regard to cross-sectional hardness, no positive effect was found. CONCLUSIONS: The effect of the infiltrant depends on the type of lesion created in vitro, and its action is limited to the lesion surface.

This study investigated the isolated and combined effect of a single application of TiF4 or NaF varnish versus daily use of a solution containing a low concentration of TiF4/NaF against tooth erosion in vitro. A total of 90 bovine enamel and 108 root dentin samples were treated as follows: control (no treatment), solution containing TiF4/NaF (500 ppm F-, pH 4.4), NaF varnish (24,500 ppm F-, pH 5.0), TiF4 varnish (24,500 ppm F-, pH 1.0), TiF4 varnish + solution, and NaF varnish + solution. The erosive challenges were performed 4 × 90s/day (0.1% citric acid, pH 2.5) and, between them, the samples were immersed in artificial saliva. The tooth loss was measured using contact profilometry (after 7 days for dentin and after 7, 10, and 14 days for enamel). All treatments were effective in reducing tooth loss, except NaF varnish for enamel on day 7 (p < 0.0001). TiF4/NaF solution and TiF4 varnish did not differ with respect to enamel loss for 10 days; thereafter, TiF4 varnish lost its protective effect compared to TiF4/NaF solution. The combination of vehicles was more effective in reducing enamel loss than both varnishes on their own but not compared to the solution. For dentin, TiF4 varnish was more effective than NaF varnish, while TiF4/NaF solution and NaF varnish were similar. The combination of vehicles improved the protective effect only when compared to NaF varnish on its own (p < 0.0001). Both types of TiF4 applications, isolated or combined, were effective against tooth erosion, but some differences in their performance were seen between enamel and dentin.

BACKGROUND: Artificial lesions produced by different protocols might directly influence the response to different remineralising treatments. This study compared the response of different artificial caries-like enamel lesions to home-care and professional fluoride based-remineralising treatments in situ. METHODS: The tested demineralising protocols were methylcellulose- MC gel, polyacrylic acid - PA gel, tetraethyl methylene diphosphanate - TEMDP solution, and acetate- Buffer solution. The lesions were remineralised using an in situ model, following a crossover and double blind design. Twelve subjects wore intra-oral appliances during 3 phases (3 d each): control (C) (saliva); home-care F(-) treatment (FD) (1,100 ppm F(-) dentifrice, 2x1 min/day); and professional (FVD) (22,600 ppm F(-) varnish) plus FD. The de-remineralisation was measured by transverse microradiography-TMR and hardness (surface hardness/cross-sectional hardness, SH/CSH, respectively). RESULTS: For SH, lesions produced by PA gel were the only one showing significant differences among the remineralising treatments (C x FD x FVD); while the TEMDP lesion were not responsive to any fluoride treatment (for both SH/CSH). For TMR, there were no differences among the remineralising treatments, regardless of the type of lesion. Generally, the most responsive lesions to fluoride were the less demineralised lesions (considering hardness: PA gel and Buffer). CONCLUSIONS: The type of lesion has influence on the surface remineralisation degree induced by home-care and professional fluoride treatments using this in situ model.

OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the effect of fluoride varnishes on the progression of tooth erosion in vitro. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-eight enamel and 60 root dentin samples were previously demineralized (0.1% citric acid, pH 2.5, 30 min), leading to a baseline and erosive wear of 12.9 and 11.4 µm, respectively. The samples were randomly treated (6 h) with a 4% TiF4 varnish (2.45%F-, pH 1.0), a 5.42% NaF varnish (2.45%F-, pH 5.0), a placebo varnish and no varnish (control). The samples were then subjected to erosive pH cycles (4x90 s/day in 0.1% citric acid, intercalated with artificial saliva) for 5 days. The increment of the erosive tooth wear was calculated. In the case of dentin, this final measurement was done with and without the demineralized organic matrix (DOM). Enamel and dentin data were analyzed using ANOVA/Tukey's and Kruskal-Wallis/Dunn tests, respectively (p<0.05). RESULTS: The TiF4 (mean±s.d: 1.5±1.1 µm) and NaF (2.1±1.7 µm) varnishes significantly reduced enamel wear progression compared to the placebo varnish (3.9±1.1 µm) and control (4.5±0.9 µm). The same differences were found for dentin in the presence and absence of the DOM, respectively: TiF4 (average: 0.97/1.87 µm), NaF (1.03/2.13 µm), placebo varnish (3.53/4.47 µm) and control (3.53/4.36 µm). CONCLUSION: The TiF4 and NaF varnishes were equally effective in reducing the progression of tooth erosion in vitro.

Este estudo teve como o objetivo avaliar in vitro o efeito do tratamento com vernizes de tetrafluoreto de titânio (TiF4) e fluoreto de sódio (NaF) (ambos com 0,95%, 1,95% e 2,45% F) sobre 1) a quantidade de F- liberada em água deionizada e saliva artificial, por período de 12h; 2) os tipos de compostos formados pela interação com a hidroxiapatita (neste caso, com soluções ao invés dos vernizes); 3) a porcentagem de elementos presentes na superfície do esmalte bovino e humano, hígidos (H) e desmineralizados (DES); 4) a quantidade de CaF2 sobre a superfície do esmalte bovino e humano, H e DES. Adicionalmente, 5) o efeito dos vernizes de TiF4 e NaF sobre a remineralização do esmalte bovino, em diferentes condições in situ, foi avaliado. Para etapa 1, a liberação de F- foi quantificada por eletrodo de íon específico. Na etapa 2, pó de HAP produzido por precipitação foi tratado com soluções fluoretadas. Os compostos formados foram avaliados por espectroscopia de infravermelho e difração de raios-X. Nas etapas 3 e 4, as superfícies tratadas com os vernizes foram analisadas por MEV- EDAX e por biópsias básicas, respectivamente. Vinte voluntários (n final=17) participaram do ensaio in situ com 3 fases cruzadas, os quais utilizaram aparelhos palatinos contendo amostras de esmalte bovino desmineralizadas tratadas com vernizes de TiF4, NaF ou placebo. As amostras foram submetidas a diferentes condições de des-remineralização (presença ou não de tela plástica; variação da frequência de aplicação de sacarose 20%) e à exposição ao dentifrício fluoretado. O volume mineral e profundidade da lesão foram avaliados por microradiografia transversal (TMR). 1) Os vernizes de TiF4 (1,95 e 2,45% F) liberaram mais fluoreto comparados aos vernizes de NaF tanto em água como em saliva artificial, sendo a diferença significativa nas primeiras 6h de contato (p<0,0001). 2) O TiF4 causou alteração na estrutura da HAP e induziu à formação de novos compostos como TiO2 e Ti (HPO4)2. 3)...

Este estudo avaliou o potencial de uma formulação experimental à base de HAP e fluoreto de sódio, para reduzir a desmineralização da dentina bovina in vitro. Oitenta e quatro amostras de dentina radicular bovina foram divididas em 7 grupos de 12 amostras, sendo submetidas a um dos seguintes tratamentos: 1) pasta Nanop plus [HAP a 20% + 9.000 ppm F, NaF); 2) pasta Nanop [HAP 20%); 3) pasta F [9.000 ppm F, NaF); 4) pasta placebo [sem HAP e F); 5) MI Paste [caseína e fosfato de cálcio); 6) MI Paste plus [caseína e fosfato de cálcio, 900 ppm F, NaF); 7) sem tratamento [controle). Os tratamentos foram realizados duas vezes ao dia, intercalados por ciclagem de pH (des-rernineralização], por 7 dias. Na sequência, as amostras foram analisadas por microdureza superficial e longitudinal (10-220 um). Os dados foram tabulados e submetidos à análise estatística [p<0,05). Em geral, os únicos tratamentos que tiveram efeito significativo na redução da desmineralização da dentina foram as pastas Nanop plus e F. Portanto, os dados confirmaram que o fluoreto ainda continua sendo o melhor agente químico para controlar a desmineralização dentária. Já a pasta experimental contendo nanopartículas de HAP foi ineficaz em reduzir a desmineralização da dentina utilizando-se o modelo experimental proposto


This study evaluated the potential of an experimental formulation containing HAP and sodium fluoride to reduce bovine dentin demineralization in vitro. Eighty-four bovine rools dentin samples were divided into 7 groups of 12 samples and subjected to one of the following treatments: 1) Nanop plus paste (HAP 20% + 9000 ppm F, NaF); 2) Nanop paste (HAP 20010) 3) F paste (9000 ppm F, NaF); 4) placebo paste (without HAP and F); 5) MI paste (casein and calcium phosphate); 6) MI Paste plus (casein and calcium phosphate, 900 ppm F, NaF); 7) no treatment (controll. The treatments were performed twice a day, interspersed by pH cycling (de-remineralization) for 7 days. Thereafter, the samples were analyzed using surface and cross-sectional microhardness (10-220 J.1m). The data was plotted and statistically analyzed (p<0.05). The treatments that produced a significant effect on the reduction of dentin demi• neralization were Nanop plus and F pastes only. Therefore, the data confirmed that fluoride is still the best chemical agent to control dental demineralization. The experimental paste containing HAP nanoparticles was ineffective in reducing dentin demineralization when using this experimental model

Fluoride varnishes play an important role in the prevention of dental caries, promoting the inhibition of demineralization and the increase of remineralization. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the amount of fluoride released into water and artificial saliva from experimental TiF4 and NaF varnishes, with different concentrations, for 12 h. Material and Methods: Fluoride varnishes were applied on acrylic blocks and then immersed in 10 ml of deionized water and artificial saliva in polystyrene bottles. The acrylic blocks were divided in seven groups (n=10): 1.55% TiF4 varnish (0.95% F, pH 1.0); 3.10% TiF4 varnish (1.90% F, pH 1.0); 3.10% and 4% TiF4 varnish (2.45% F, pH 1.0); 2.10% NaF varnish (0.95% F, pH 5.0); 4.20% NaF varnish (1.90% F, pH 5.0); 5.42% NaF varnish (2.45% F, pH 5.0) and control (no treatment, n=5). The peak of fluoride release occurred at 3 h. There was a better dose-response relationship among the varnishes exposed to water than to artificial saliva. Conclusions: The 3.10% and 4% TiF4 -based varnishes have greater ability to release fluoride into water and artificial saliva compared to NaF varnish; however, more studies must be conducted to elucidate the mechanism of action of TiF4 varnish on tooth surface. .

UNLABELLED: Fluoride varnishes play an important role in the prevention of dental caries, promoting the inhibition of demineralization and the increase of remineralization. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the amount of fluoride released into water and artificial saliva from experimental TiF4 and NaF varnishes, with different concentrations, for 12 h. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fluoride varnishes were applied on acrylic blocks and then immersed in 10 ml of deionized water and artificial saliva in polystyrene bottles. The acrylic blocks were divided in seven groups (n=10): 1.55% TiF4 varnish (0.95% F, pH 1.0); 3.10% TiF4 varnish (1.90% F, pH 1.0); 3.10% and 4% TiF4 varnish (2.45% F, pH 1.0); 2.10% NaF varnish (0.95% F, pH 5.0); 4.20% NaF varnish (1.90% F, pH 5.0); 5.42% NaF varnish (2.45% F, pH 5.0) and control (no treatment, n=5). Currently, it has been observed a significant increase in the prevalence of dental erosion as a consequence of frequent exposure to acids from foods, drinks and gastric juice. The aim of this review was to give some new insights about the definition and diagnosis of this condition, to clarify the causal factors and to show the preventive strategies and restorative therapy. Dental erosion is complex condition dependent on the interaction of chemical, biological and behavior factors. The diagnosis is generally performed by the analysis of the clinical appearance of the lesions in combination with the patient’s history. Some new technologies have been developed to help in early diagnosis and to quantify dental erosion in different phases. Preventive measures are established according to the causal factors, which may include the dietary intervention, modification of acidic drinks, and behavioral changes, or the modification of the tooth surface to increase its resistance against acidic attacks. The restorative treatment may range from minimally invasive therapies to multidisciplinary interventions. The clinicians should know how to detect the condition early, so that preventive measures can be applied before the lesions progress. Therapeutic strategies in high-risk patients should be as conservative as possible, involving multidisciplinary and preventive approaches with a periodic control for the success of the treatment.


Atualmente, tem-se observado um aumento significativo na prevalência de erosão dentária como consequência da exposição frequente aos ácidos oriundos de alimentos, bebidas e do suco gástrico. O objetivo desta revisão foi expor alguns novos direcionamentos sobre a definição e diagnóstico desta condição, esclarecer os fatores causais e apresentar as estratégias para a prevenção e o tratamento. A erosão dentária é uma condição complexa dependente da interação entre fatores químicos, biológicos e comportamentais. O diagnóstico é geralmente realizado por meio da análise da aparência clínica das lesões em combinação com a história do paciente. Novas tecnologias foram desenvolvidas para ajudar no diagnóstico precoce e para quantificar as diferentes fases da erosão dentária. As medidas preventivas são estabelecidas de acordo com os fatores causais que podem incluir a intervenção na dieta, modificação de bebidas ácidas, mudanças de comportamento, ou a modificação da superfície dentária com o objetivo de aumentar a sua resistência ao ataque ácido. O tratamento restaurador pode variar de terapias minimamente invasivas a intervenções multidisciplinares. Os clínicos devem saber como detectar a condição na sua fase inicial, para que medidas preventivas possam ser aplicadas antes da progressão da lesão. Estratégias terapêuticas em pacientes de alto risco devem ser as mais conservadoras possíveis, envolvendo abordagens multidisciplinares e preventivas com um controle periódico do paciente, para o sucesso do tratamento

The aim of this study was to compare the effect of toothpastes containing TiF(4), NaF, and SnF(2) on tooth erosion-abrasion. Bovine enamel and dentin specimens were distributed into 10 groups (n = 12): experimental placebo toothpaste (no F); NaF (1450 ppm F); TiF(4) (1450 ppm F); SnF(2) (1450 ppm F); SnF(2) (1100 ppm F) + NaF (350 ppm F); TiF(4) (1100 ppm F) + NaF (350 ppm F); commercial toothpaste Pro-Health (SnF(2)-1100 ppm F + NaF-350 ppm F, Oral B); commercial toothpaste Crest (NaF-1.500 ppm F, Procter & Gamble); abrasion without toothpaste and only erosion. The erosion was performed 4 × 90 s/day (Sprite Zero). The toothpastes' slurries were applied and the specimens abraded using an electric toothbrush 2 × 15 s/day. Between the erosive and abrasive challenges, the specimens remained in artificial saliva. After 7 days, the tooth wear was evaluated using contact profilometry (µm). The experimental toothpastes with NaF, TiF(4), SnF(2), and Pro-Health showed a significant reduction in enamel wear (between 42% and 54%). Pro-Health also significantly reduced the dentin wear. The toothpastes with SnF(2)/NaF and TiF(4)/NaF showed the best results in the reduction of enamel wear (62-70%) as well as TiF(4), SnF(2), SnF(2)/NaF, and TiF(4)/NaF for dentin wear (64-79%) (P < 0.05). Therefore, the experimental toothpastes containing both conventional and metal fluoride seem to be promising in reducing tooth wear.

OBJECTIVE. Previous in vitro study has shown that TiF(4) varnish might reduce enamel erosion. No data regarding the effect of this experimental varnish on enamel erosion plus abrasion, however, are available so far. Thus, this in vitro study aimed to analyse the effect of TiF(4) compared with NaF varnishes and solutions, to protect against enamel erosion with or without abrasion. METHODS. Enamel specimens were pre-treated with experimental-TiF(4) (2.45% F), experimental-NaF (2.45% F), NaF-Duraphat (2.26% F), and placebo varnishes; NaF (2.26% F) and TiF(4) (2.45% F) solutions. Controls remained untreated. The erosive challenge was performed using a soft drink (pH 2.6) 4 × 90 s/day (ERO) and the toothbrushing abrasion (ERO+ABR) 2 × 10 s/day, for 5 days. Between the challenges, the specimens were exposed to artificial saliva. Enamel loss was measured profilometrically (µm). RESULTS. Kruskal-Wallis/Dunn tests showed that all fluoridated varnishes (TiF(4) -ERO:0.53 ± 0.20, ERO+ABR:0.65 ± 0.19/NaF-ERO:0.94 ± 0.18, ERO+ABR:1.74 ± 0.37/Duraphat-ERO:1.00 ± 0.37, ERO+ABR:1.72 ± 0.58) were able to significantly reduce enamel loss when compared with placebo varnish (ERO:3.45 ± 0.41/ERO+ABR:3.20 ± 0.66) (P < 0.0001). Placebo varnish, control (ERO:2.68 ± 0.53/ERO+ABR:3.01 ± 0.34), and fluoridated (NaF-ERO:2.84 ± 0.09/ERO+ABR:2.40 ± 0.21/TiF(4) -ERO:3.55 ± 0.59/ERO+ABR:4.10 ± 0.38) solutions did not significantly differ from each other. CONCLUSION. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the TiF(4) varnish seems to be a promising treatment to reduce enamel loss under mild erosive and abrasive conditions in vitro.

A escovação com dentifrício fluoretado é um importante método para a prevenção da cárie dentária e da doença periodontal, tanto pela remoção da placa bacteriana como pela administração de agentes químicos presentes nos dentifrícios como o sal fluoretado e antimicrobianos.Há uma variedade de dentifrícios com diferentes formulações químicas disponíveis no mercado. Isto posto, é importante que o dentista conheça em detalhes a composição dos dentifrícios e saiba quando e como indicar cada tipo de creme dental presente no mercado. Este texto abordará primeiramente a composição detalhada dos dentifrícios com o objetivo de dar subsídios para que os dentistas saibam como e quando indicar os diferentes produtos presentes no mercado. Na sequência, serão abordadas as principais recomendações que o dentista deve dar ao paciente com base em meta-análises, revisões sistemáticas e estudos clínicos aleatorizados e controlados, de acordo com cada faixa etária tanto para a prevenção da cárie dentária como para a doença periodontal, levando em consideração outros problemas bucais que podem ocorrer concomitantemente como o desgaste, sensibilidade e manchamento dentário. Com base nesta revisão pôde-se concluir que as indicações dos dentifrícios devem ser feitas com cautela, uma vez que a etiologia envolvida nos problemas bucais é muito ampla, englobando uma série de fatores que não podem ser controlados somente com a indicação de um dentifrício específico.


Brushing of the teeth with fluoride toothpaste is an important method for the prevention of dental caries and periodontal diseases, due to both the removal of dental plaque and the administration of chemical agents present in dentifrices, such as fluoride and antimicrobials. As there is a variety of dentifrices available on the market, with different chemical formulations, it is important that dentists should be aware of the composition of dentifrices and also of the recommendation criteria for each kind of toothpaste that is available on the market. Initially, this text will address the detailed composition of the dentifrices with the objective of providing support for dentists to know how and when to recommend each kind of toothpaste. Subsequently, the main recommendations which the dentist should give to the patient will be summarized based on meta-analyses, systematic reviews and randomized, controlled clinical studies, according to each age group, for the prevention of both dental caries and periodontal diseases. Additionally, other oral problems that may arise concurrently, such as worn teeth, hypersensitivity and dental staining are considered. Based on this review, it can be concluded that the recommendations for the use of dentifrices must be made with caution, as the etiology involved in oral problems is diverse, embracing a number of factors that cannot be controlled with just one specific toothpaste.

OBJECTIVE: This in vitro study aimed to analyze the influence of neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser irradiation on the efficacy of titanium tetrafluoride (TiF(4)) and sodium fluoride (NaF) varnishes and solutions to protect enamel against erosion. BACKGROUND DATA: The effect of Nd:YAG laser irradiation on NaF and AmF was analyzed; however, there is no available data on the interaction between Nd:YAG laser irradiation and TiF(4). METHODS: Bovine enamel specimens were pre-treated with NaF varnish, TiF(4) varnish, NaF solution, TiF(4) solution, placebo varnish, Nd:YAG (84.9 J/cm(2)), Nd:YAG prior to or through NaF varnish, Nd:YAG prior to or through TiF(4) varnish, Nd:YAG prior to or through NaF solution, Nd:YAG prior to or through TiF(4) solution, and Nd:YAG prior to or through placebo varnish. Controls remained untreated. Ten specimens in each group were then subjected to an erosive demineralization (Sprite Zero, 4 × 90 s/day) and remineralization (artificial saliva, between the erosive cycles) cycling for 5 days. Enamel loss was measured profilometrically (µm). Additionally, treated but non-eroded specimens were additionally analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) (each group n = 2). The data were statistically analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test (p < 0.05). RESULTS: Only TiF(4) varnish (1.8 ± 0.6 µm), laser prior to TiF(4) varnish (1.7 ± 0.3 µm) and laser prior to TiF(4) solution (1.4 ± 0.3 µm) significantly reduced enamel erosion compared to the control (4.1 ± 0.6 µm). SEM pictures showed that specimens treated with TiF(4) varnish presented a surface coating. CONCLUSIONS: Nd:YAG laser irradiation was not effective against enamel erosion and it did not have any influence on the efficacy of F, except for TiF(4) solution. On the other hand, TiF(4) varnish protected against enamel erosion, without the influence of laser irradiation.

Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar do efeito da aplicação tópica de um verniz e solução experimental de TiF4, comparando-os ao verniz e solução de NaF, sobre o processo de des-remineralização do esmalte dentário in situ. Para tal, 132 blocos de esmalte bovino (4x4mm) foram selecionados pela microdureza de superfície, sendo que em metade deles foi produzida lesão de cárie artificial em solução desmineralizante (pH 5,0, 6 dias). Na seqüência, foi determinada a microdureza de superfície pós-lesão. A outra metade dos blocos permaneceu hígida. Onze voluntários participaram de 3 fases cruzadas (14 dias cada, washout de 7 dias), boca-dividida e cegas, nas quais utilizaram aparelhos palatinos com 4 amostras de esmalte por fase (2 hígidas e 2 desmineralizadas), sendo que cada tipo de amostra recebeu um tipo de tratamento (verniz ou solução). Em todas as amostras permitiu-se o acúmulo de placa dentária. Em uma fase (Fase A), foram aplicados agentes a base de NaF a 5,42% (2,45% F- e pH 5,0), em outra fase (Fase B), foram utilizados agentes a base de TiF4 a 4% (2,45% F- e pH 1,0), e na última fase (Fase C) foram utilizados agentes placebos (verniz sem flúor pH 5,0 e sem tratamento). Os tratamentos foram realizados in vitro (verniz-6 h e solução-1 minuto). Durante o período in situ, os voluntários aplicaram solução de sacarose a 20%, 8x5min ao dia, sobre os blocos hígidos, para provocar a desmineralização. Já para os blocos desmineralizados nenhum procedimento foi realizado, para permitir a remineralização. A microdureza de superfície final foi realizada, para o cálculo da porcentagem de variação de microdureza de superfície, assim como a microdureza longitudinal e microradiografia transversal, para o cálculo das perdas de microdureza e volume mineral integradas, respectivamente. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the experimental TiF4 varnish and solution, comparing with NaF solution and varnish, on dental enamel de-remineralization in situ. For that, 132 bovine enamel samples (4x4 mm) were selected using surface microhardness, and half of them were submitted to artificial caries lesion formation using a demineralizing solution (pH 5.0, 6 days). The surface microhardness after the demineralization was measured. The other half of the samples remained sound. Eleven volunteers took part in this cross-over, split-mouth and double-blind study performed in 3 phases of each 14 days (washout of 7 days). Four enamel samples were worn in palatal appliances (2 sound and 2 demineralized), being each type of sample submitted to one treatment (varnish or solution). The dental plaque accumulation was allowed on all samples. In phase A, 5.42% NaF varnish/solution was applied (2.45% F-, pH 5.0); in phase B, 4% TiF4 varnish/solution was used (2.45% F-, pH 1.0) and at the last phase (phase C) the placebo treatments were performed (placebo varnish pH 5.0 and no-treatment). The treatments were performed in vitro (varnish-6h and solution-1min). During the in situ phase, the volunteers dripped a solution containing 20% weight/volume (w/v) sucrose on the sound samples for 5 min, 8 times a day, to provoke demineralization. While on the demineralized samples nothing was done, in order to allow remineralization. The final surface microhardness was analyzed for the calculation of the % of surface microhardness change, as well as the cross-sectional hardness and the transversal microradiography, for the calculation of the integrated loss of microhardness and mineral volume, respectively.
